Hi everyone,

Please post any questions you have for Daniel Brooks, our guest speaker on 18th February. Daniel is the MD of Elland Silver Band who have risen through the contesting ranks from third to championship section in ten years. They also have an impressive organisation - five bands in total - and an extremely successful youth band.

Here is the message I sent to Daniel when I asked him to give us a talk

"I was hoping you could give a talk on how the band has grown and developed as it's progressed through the sections and your perspective on band improvement; the different bands that make up your organisation; and the challenges you've faced/overcome. Any banding stories and anecdotes would be more than welcome too!

Here at Maltby, we're very keen to develop & grow our band and widen our training band. Any examples and advice you can provide would be much appreciated."

I would like to know what the preparation for a big contest is , when they start, sectionals such like, . Also  whether they consider going to Butlins,  a band at their level would surely be tempted by the prize money

Hi Dave, thanks for setting this up. I've got a few questions if that's ok?

How has their snr. band sustained improvements in order to move up the sections and not yo-yo between 2nd and 3rd for example? Assuming they don't just sack a load of players each time they move up they must be really good at improving playing standards year on year?

How do they avoid their performance being affected by nerves, for example in a contest when one player has a wobbly bit and it ends up affecting everyone from then on?

How do they recruit young players to the training bands? Do they have links with local schools, peri teachers etc?

Thanks!

Questions for Thursday night

For your main band

  • What is your contest / concert balance like?
  • How long do you spend on say the preparation for the regional contest?
  • Do you do sectional rehearsals and if so where in the preparation are they placed i.e. early or late?
  • What expectation do have on your players to be able to play their parts early on in the preparation of a piece?
  • What is your rehearsal attendance like; what are your expectations?

For your organisation

  • In what form do you get support from Calderdale Council?
  • Do your players in the main band pay subs or how is income raised; hat is your normal concert fee?
  • With five bands what kind of venue do you use?
  • Do you have links/ support from local schools / music centres?
  • How large is your catchment area?
